Fawcett’s Favorites 5-11-20

Every week I run into a few articles that I feel are especially valuable, so each Monday I plan to share some of the best with you, my readers. I hope you find them helpful.

This week’s favorites include a free 50+ speaker virtual summit on diversifying your income which starts today, what happened in the first week of Montana’s reopening, will the pandemic change your retirement plans, ways to significantly cut your spending habits, and are healthcare workers just pawns in the current battle?

Happy reading!

States are beginning to cautiously reopen. But how is that working? FiPhysician details what has happened in Reopening Montana- The First Week. I love his take on the reopening and especially his explanation of why the media is incorrect about the need to test everyone.  He also has a great explanation of what schools will look like in our new normal.

Many people are just about to retire. Some are wondering if they should indeed pull the trigger. Leisure Freak walks us through what it was like in 2008 when faced with the same question. The article is Echoes of 2008: Will COVID-19 Change Your Retirement Plans? Last week I discussed how the current conditions effected my early retirement. It can be read here. Do you think you would retire next month if that had been your plan?

Millions of people are out of work and struggling financially. BC Krygowski has put together a book filled with ways to decrease your spending habits. Her family is a great example of spending cut ninjas. If you are needing ideas on ways to cut back on your spending, get a copy of her book, Spending Habits for Professionals Who Want to FIRE (Financial Independence/ Retire Early).

Today is a tough time to be an emergency or critical care physicians. In an article by XRAYVSN called The COVID-19 Battlefield: Are Healthcare Workers Pawns he likens them to arriving with a knife to a nuclear war. Today I am thankful I do not have to face some of the decisions being made by physicians. Isolating yourself from your family so you don’t infect them is something I never faced during my career. I’m thankful that I can be isolating with my family. My hat’s off to all the front line workers. Thank you for what you do.

I hope you enjoy the virtual summit and the articles as much as I did. I look forward to updating you again next week with a few more articles I find especially interesting. If you read an especially good article, send me the link so I can share it with others.

  1. Thanks Cory for featuring a post of mine.

It is indeed a strange time indeed to be practicing medicine. Hopefully some sort of normalcy will return.
