Each week I run into a few articles that I feel are especially valuable. Every Monday I would like to share some of the best with you, my readers. I hope you find them helpful.
This week’s favorites include how a physician can become a successful landlord, understanding different types of disability insurance, the bumpy road to a post-medicine career, and the evolution of the doctor visit.
Happy reading!
There are many roadblocks on the way to becoming a successful landlord, especially education and the way we think about being a landlord. While I was a full time surgeon, I managed 64 rental units which took about a dozen hours a month. I could have spent less time, but I enjoyed doing a little tinkering. The Prudent Plastic Surgeon has started down the landlording road by purchasing his first rental property. He shares his experience in How to Become a Successful Landlord as a Physician. If you want to break through the barrier and own rental real estate the easy way, so you don’t have a second job, then check out my course The Doctors Course to Automating Your Real Estate Investments.
Insurance is a very confusing topic, mostly because of all the clauses used by the insurance company to deny payment. XRAYVSN gives us a better understanding of The Different Types of Disability Insurance. I remember when I bought my first policy, since I didn’t know anything about disability insurance, I purchased the policy the agent told me was best. I didn’t realize at the time that my agent was really a salesman in disguise. I wish I had known more about what I was buying instead of blindly following his lead. Here is a chance for you to know more before you buy. Knowledge is King.
Recently there have been a lot of physicians who want to stop practicing medicine. Some are actually leaving medicine and others wish they could leave. Crispy Doc gives us a nice summary of his attempt to find something else to do for a career after medicine in his article Negative Outcomes on the Path to Discovering a Post Medical Career. If you are burned out and want a change, here is a good look at one person’s journey to find something productive to do after medicine. If you are considering leaving medicine, be sure to read The Doctors Guide to Smart Career Alternative and Retirement before you pull the trigger.
We all know that medicine is not what it used to be. It has evolved into a billing empire for medical systems, but it doesn’t have to stay that way. It evolved to this, so it could evolve to something else. KevinMD published the thoughts of Dr. Samuel Shem, author of The House of God and Man’s 4th Best Ho$pital, in his article on The Evolution of the “Doctor Visit.” We can influence the future of medicine.
I hope you enjoy these articles as much as I did. I look forward to updating you again next week with a few more articles I find especially interesting. If you read an especially good article, send me the link so I can share it with others.
Thank you for the shout out Dr. Fawcett! Much of what I have learned in this journey is thanks to your awesome books, blog and course!
Glad to have helped.
Cory,
Particularly enjoyed the Samuel Shem article – I often quote at least one of the laws of the House of God every month, most often, “If you don’t take a temperature you can’t find a fever,” and that ilk.
While his take on social services has not withstood the test of time, many of his other critiques have held up well over the decades.
Also really dug the Prudent Plastic Surgeon’s piece as well!
Thanks for the kind shout out,
CD
Thanks for the feature. Much appreciated.
